On September 19, 2023, CSNDC joined with BlueHub Capital, a Boston-based nonprofit, to launch a first-in-nation pilot in Dorchester that will provide a local driver with affordable access to an electric vehicle, while his affordable housing development receives the charging infrastructure he needs to power the car.

Girls Latin Apartments, operated by CSNDC, installed an innovative new technology from Fermata Energy called vehicle-to-grid (V2G). This charger can buy and sell electricity between the electric vehicle and the grid, saving both the building and the driver money.

The pilot aims to lower the cost to drive an electric vehicle, and eliminate the costs for affordable housing developments to host charging infrastructure — exploring an alternative to fill the gap in local and federal EV initiatives that leave many low-income communities behind. Ultimately, a program like this could make it cost-neutral for a landlord to install an EV charger, and even make the electricity free for EV drivers in these communities.

Attending the launch ceremonies were:

  • Gail Latimore, Executive Director of Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corp
  • DeWitt (Dick) Jones, President of Bluehub Energy
  • Elyse Cherry, CEO of BlueHub
  • Melissa Chan, Director of Grid Solutions and Strategic Partnerships at Fermata Energy
  • Tom Walling, Regional Vice President of Enterprise Holdings Boston
  • Christopher J. Worrell, MA State Representative
  • Nick Collins, MA State Senator
